Washington Commanders wide receiver Treylon Burks thrust himself back into the national spotlight on Sunday night, delivering one of Week 13’s most electric plays and reinforcing why Washington took a chance on the former first-round pick. In the third quarter of the Commanders’ prime-time showdown against the Denver Broncos, Burks hauled in a spectacular one-handed touchdown grab in tight coverage, a highlight instantly drawing comparisons to Odell Beckham Jr.’s iconic catch.

Matched up against aggressive Broncos coverage in the red zone, Burks used his size, body control and reach to snag a short pass with just his right hand while tumbling to the turf. The play, coming on a 5-yard strike from quarterback Marcus Mariota, flipped momentum for Washington and briefly swung the lead in the Commanders’ favor. Multiple outlets described the catch as “insane” and “spectacular,” noting how little separation Burks had when he attacked the ball in the air.

For Washington, Burks’ breakout moment arrives at a crucial juncture. The team entered the night trying to stabilize a season that has been undermined by injuries at wide receiver and up-and-down quarterback play. Burks was signed to Washington’s practice squad in mid-October after being released from the Tennessee Titans’ injured reserve list, then promoted to the 53-man roster earlier in November as the Commanders scrambled for depth.

Burks’ journey to this highlight has been anything but smooth. Since being drafted 18th overall by the Titans in 2022, he has battled a torn ACL in 2024 and a broken collarbone suffered on a one-handed diving attempt during 2025 training camp. Those setbacks limited him to just 27 games over three seasons before his move to Washington. Commanders coaches hoped he could finally stay healthy enough to tap into the physical, downfield playmaking that made him a star at Arkansas, and Sunday’s acrobatic touchdown was the clearest evidence yet that the upside is still there.

Heading into the Broncos game, Burks had already begun carving out a role, posting four receptions for 72 yards in his first two appearances with Washington. Now, with a national audience having watched him make one of the catches of the season on Sunday Night Football, expectations around the 25-year-old have shifted. If Burks can pair sustained health with the explosiveness he flashed against Denver, the Commanders may have uncovered a badly needed weapon for the stretch run – and a reclamation project that could reshape his once-derailed career.
